Minivator 1000 Series
The stairlift that pioneered DC battery operation.
Manufacturer: Minivator (now Handicare)
About This Exhibit
The Minivator 1000 series, introduced in 1985, represented a revolutionary approach to stairlift power. Instead of running directly from mains electricity, these units used rechargeable batteries charged by a connection at the rail's ends.
This DC battery system offered several advantages. The stairlift would continue to operate during power outages — critical for elderly users. The motor ran more smoothly and quietly. And the lower voltage made the entire system inherently safer.
The 1000 series also introduced the concept of charging at both ends of the rail, ensuring the batteries were always topped up regardless of where the user parked the chair.
Historical Significance
The DC battery system pioneered by Minivator became the industry standard and remains the dominant power configuration for stairlifts today.
Did You Know?
The original battery packs could provide up to 40 trips on a full charge — enough for a week of normal use even during an extended power outage.
