About This Exhibit

The perch or standing stairlift represents an alternative approach for users who have difficulty bending their knees to sit, or who find standing more comfortable than sitting. The design dates back to the early 1990s, developed in response to user needs.

Instead of a full seat, perch stairlifts feature a small padded surface that the user leans against in a semi-standing position. The backrest provides support and security during travel. Safety straps hold the user in position.

Perch stairlifts are particularly popular among users with hip replacements, knee problems, or certain spinal conditions that make sitting painful.

Historical Significance

Perch stairlifts demonstrated that accessibility solutions need to accommodate diverse user needs and physical capabilities.

Did You Know?

Many users of perch stairlifts report that the design actually feels more natural and secure than a traditional seated position.
